The American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association and Tulane Health System will host a Stroke Relay on Oct. 26 in the Tulane Medical Center Main Atrium, 1415 Tulane Ave. in New Orleans.

Tulane Health System leaders and providers will compete in a fun, five-station obstacle course which demonstrates stroke warning signs during this event, which begins at 2 p.m.

Immediately following the Stroke Relay, Tulane Health System will receive designations from the American Heart Association in resuscitation and stroke.

With flu season starting, the Louisiana Department of Health reminds all residents of the importance of getting an annual flu vaccine.

The flu causes approximately 500 deaths and nearly 3,000 hospitalizations each year in Louisiana, and tens of thousands of deaths in the United States.

Lakeview Regional Medical Center, a campus of Tulane Medical Center, is hosting a free educational event on Nov. 8 about hernias and the latest treatment options. Dr. Cary Gray, General Surgeon with Lakeview Regional Physician Group, will give a short presentation about the three types of hernias, and will be available to answer questions. Dr. Gray and staff from Lakeview’s robotic surgery team will also give an up-close demonstration of the daVinci Surgical Robot System, which is used in minimally invasive hernia repair.

Patricia Molina, MD, PhD, Professor and Head of Physiology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, has been awarded a grant in the amount of $390,532 over two years to test the effectiveness of physical exercise to improve the regulation of blood sugar levels in people living with HIV/AIDS who also use alcohol. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism awarded the competitive grant.
