Baby-Friendly USA announced that St. Tammany Parish Hospital has received prestigious international recognition as a Designated Baby-Friendly birth facility.

“We are honored to be named among America’s leading baby-friendly facilities,” said Cindy Ingram, STPH director of women’s and children’s services. “St. Tammany Parish Hospital is well known locally as the best place to have your baby, and now we have confirmation nationally, we’re the place to learn best practices for breastfeeding your baby.”

A study conducted by LSU Health New Orleans researchers provides new evidence that early exposure to multiple health disciplines in pipeline programs targeting underserved/underrepresented students interested in health professions reduces the development of traditional role and leadership stereotypes about professional healthcare teams and practice. Programs that include interprofessional health exposure will ultimately improve collaboration resulting in better patient outcomes. The findings are reported in Health and Interprofessional Practice, published October 18, 2018.

With flu season approaching, several schools in the Greater New Orleans area expect to stay one step ahead of illness by offering local families access to a new innovative device, Kinsa Smart Thermometers -- an app-enabled smart thermometer that tracks fever, symptoms, and influenza-like-illness activity in real time. Kinsa partnered with Ochsner Health System to sponsor the FLUency Program, a community health initiative that invites families and staff at select schools to receive free Kinsa Smart Thermometers as a way to prevent illness and promote a healthier school year.

Tulane Medical Center has been recognized as a 2018-19 High-Performing Hospital by U.S. News & World Report for its treatment of two of the region’s most serious health concerns – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure. 

This designation is part of the publication’s annual Best Hospitals rankings, which evaluates more than 5,000 hospitals nationwide. The Best Hospitals methodologies include objective measures such as patient survival, the number of times a given procedure is performed, infection rates, adequacy of nursing staff, and more.
