Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cause of cancer deaths for both women and men, with 3,660 new diagnoses in Louisiana estimated in 2018 alone. However, there’s a new opportunity to turn the tide against this deadly disease through the newly available lung cancer screening, which helps diagnose the disease in the earliest stages when it’s most curable. During Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the American Lung Association highlights that awareness of lung cancer is more important than ever, as the lifesaving lung cancer screening has the potential to save thousands of lives.
The public is invited to attend a community kick-off event to announce the launch of the Morehouse Parish Garden to Table Project on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the LSU Ag Center Auditorium, 9609 Marlatt Drive in Bastrop. Through a Louisiana Healthcare Connections Community Health Grant, the Garden to Table Project will install raised-bed gardens at the LSU Ag Center office. Seasonal fruits and vegetables will be grown and maintained by volunteers designated and trained by the LSU Ag Center’s horticulture and nutrition employees.
Visit any Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) location on Nov. 15 for the Great American Smokeout, an all-day tobacco cessation event. The theme this year is Tobacco Free LIFE: Get on Board with Commit to Quit. The public is invited to stop by and learn how CIS can support an individual’s “quit game plan” with resources from a free cessation program; and to participate in interactive displays for a chance to win various prizes.

Children’s Hospital and Tulane University School of Medicine have signed an affiliation agreement to work together on clinical, academic, and research activities in pediatrics.
Louisiana’s only free-standing hospital focused entirely on the care of children will join forces with Tulane to increase access to high-quality pediatric healthcare and enhance pediatric educational and training opportunities for medical students and medical residents in Louisiana.
