University Medical Center New Orleans and the Spirit of Charity Foundation recognized five University Medical Center employees pursuing careers in nursing during the 2026 Julie Newman Nursing Scholarship Ceremony. The scholarship has a unique story rooted in the relationship between a nurse, a patient and a grateful family. The Kenneth and Harle Montgomery Foundation established the Julie Newman Nursing Scholarship Fund through the Spirit of Charity Foundation to honor the memory of Gwendolyn Sessions and recognize the compassionate care provided by University Medical Center Registered Nurse and House Supervisor Julie Newman.
Created in 2023, the scholarship helps UMC employees who are currently enrolled in nursing school to pursue their education, initial nursing licensure, and future careers at University Medical Center. Each recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship toward required academic expenses.
