The Northshore Heart Walk, American Heart Association Lace Up to Fund Research

The American Heart Association’s 2019 Northshore Heart Walk welcomes the community to join them on June 1. Festivities begin at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. at Fontainebleau State Park, 62883 Highway 1089 in Mandeville.

The non-competitive event is still focused on its initial assignment, which is funding research and programs through walking together to change lives throughout the Northshore and Greater New Orleans area. Locally sponsored by Slidell Memorial Hospital, St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center Northshore, Florida Marine Transporters, and North Oaks Health System, the event is free and open to the public. The walk features a 3.2 mile route.

Each day, we lose about 2,150 Americans from heart disease—the No. 1 killer in the United States. Stroke, the No. 5 killer and leading cause of severe disability, claims the lives of nearly 219,000 people each year.

Brisk walking for as little as 30 minutes a day has proven health benefits, such as providing increased energy and circulation, as well as reduced risk of heart disease.

The Northshore Heart Walk is among 300 Heart Walks held in communities across the nation. Individuals and teams can register by visiting www.NorthshoreHeartWalk.org.
