The Louisiana Department of Health has reopened all molluscan shellfish growing waters, Areas 1-28. The areas had previously been closed as a precaution due to adverse weather conditions from Tropical Storm Harvey.
Tropical Storm Harvey brought the threat of large amounts of rain to oyster harvesting areas, which can introduce runoff and bacteria into the water. With the northward movement of the storm resulting in decreased rainfall, conditions are considered safe to reopen the areas.
Research led by Suresh Alahari, PhD, Fred Brazda Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, has demonstrated the potential of a protein to treat or prevent metabolic diseases, including obesity and diabetes. The findings are published online in the Journal of Biological Chemistry as a Paper in Press, available here.
Touro Infirmary and Crescent City Physicians are sponsoring “Pints for Prostates,” a beer tasting and prostate cancer awareness event on Sept. 14. The event will be held at NOLA Brewing, 3001 Tchoupitoulas St. in New Orleans, from 5:30–8 p.m.
A portion of ticket sales benefits the Pints for Prostates organization. Tickets are $15 for advanced sales, and $20 at the door. The price includes two pints of NOLA beer, food from McClure’s Barbeque, and a souvenir pint glass.
