University Medical Center of New Orleans, AAAneurysm Outreach, and W.L. Gore and Associates are planning a free screening event Oct. 13 from 8 a.m.-12 noon for abdominal aortic aneurysm and thoracic aortic aneurysms in the UMC Conference Center, 2000 Canal Street in New Orleans. Other partners include Luke’s House Clinic and Healthy Blue Louisiana.

“This screening test is a simple ultrasound. It only takes a few minutes and is painless,” according to William Risher, MD. “If an aneurysm is found early, it can be treated to prevent rupturing.”

The LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine will hold its annual White Coat Ceremony on Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Jung Hotel Grand Hall, 1500 Canal Street in New Orleans. This year, 202 members of the  LSU Health New Orleans Medical School Class of 2022 will receive white coats, a visible symbol of patient care. During the ceremony, students are “coated” by faculty members chosen by the class for their commitment to medical education and their students.

Parents are urged to take advantage of free child safety seat inspections on Sept. 29 at locations throughout the state. Organized through the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force and University Medical Center New Orleans, the inspection program is part of National Seat Check Saturday and Child Passenger Safety Week Sept. 23-29.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a rare lung disease that causes irreversible scarring of the lungs and makes it hard to breathe.  This chronic lung disease is often fatal, with most succumbing to the disease three to five years after diagnosis.  In a new series of videos produced by the American Lung Association, Randy Cooke shares his tips on what he’s learned after being diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) – the most common type of pulmonary fibrosis that affects 140,000 Americans and with an estimated 50,000 new cases each year.
