North Oaks Dietetic Interns
Volunteer at Camp Victory
Campers attending Camp Victory learned how
making good food choices helps to manage their
diabetes from the North Oaks Dietetic Intern-
ship Class of 2013-2014 who volunteered at the
this summer. The camp, specifically for children
with diabetes, is held annually in Leesville, and is
cosponsored by the American Diabetes Associa-
tion and Louisiana Lions Club.
Dietetic Interns, who served as camp counselors
for the age 11-14 group, included Ashley Braud
and AmandaHotchkiss of BatonRouge, BryanDel-
champs of Mandeville, Kelly Beard of Houston, Tx.,
Emily Nickens of Ponchatoula, and Sara Perrilloux
of Hammond.
Ochoa Appointed To
Endowed Chair
Dr. Steve Nelson, Dean of the School of Medicine
at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, has
appointed Augusto Ochoa, MD, Director of the
LSUHSC Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center, as the
recipient of the Al Copeland/Cancer Crusaders
Chair in Neuroendocrine Cancer. The $1 million
endowed chair is funded by support from the Al
Copeland Foundation and the Cancer Crusaders,
whichwas competitivelymatchedwith funds from
the Louisiana Board of Regents Endowed Chairs
for Eminent Scholars Program.
Dr. Ochoa earned his MD from the Universidad
de Antioquia in Colombia in 1982. That year, he
started a postdoctoral fellowship at the Immu-
nobiology Research Center at the University of
Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he became an
Assistant Professor in 1986. He served as Head of
the Immunotherapy Laboratory for the National
Cancer Institute (NCI) from 1989 to 1996 and
Head of the NCI Signal Transduction Laboratory
from 1996 to 1997 where he designed and led
several clinical trials using
the patient’s own immune
system to treat cancer.  At
LSU Health Sciences Cen-
ter New Orleans, Dr. Ochoa
started and leads the can-
cer immunology program
. He is also a professor of
Pediatrics and an adjunct associate professor of
Biochemistry.
Dr. Ochoa was also recently selected as one
of ten recipients nationally of the 2013 National
Institutes of Health Transformative Research
Award. The award comes with a $2.5 million
grant over five years to LSUHSC to support the
development of new treatments for severe
viral diseases, including herpes infections, pan-
demic influenza, and cancers caused viruses, by
manipulating how the immune system responds
to severe viral and inflammatory infections.
Surgeons Named To Best
Doctors in America® List
Frank DellaCroce, MD, FACS; Scott Sullivan, MD,
FACS; and Christopher Trahan, MD of the Center
for Restorative Breast Surgery and St. Charles Sur-
gical Hospital, have been named to the list of Best
Doctors in America® for 2013.
Selections to the list are based on surveys of
more than 53,000 medical experts in over 450
specialties and subspecialties worldwide; phy-
sicians cannot pay to be included on the list
and they are not paid for their input. The only
way to be recognized as one of the Best Doc-
tors in America® is for a doctor to earn high
marks for clinical ability from his or her peers.
Hebert Joins LSUHSC Faculty
Dr. Steve Nelson, Dean of the School of Medicine
at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, has
appointed Dr. Corey Hebert as an Assistant Pro-
fessor of Pediatrics. Dr. Hebert is the Chief Execu-
tive Officer of Community Health TV, which is the
parent company of BlackHealthTV.com, a source
for African American health information on the
web. He also hosts a weekly radio talk show on
the Cumulus Broadcasting Network called “Doc-
tor For The People,” during which he answers
health questions live on the air from people
throughout the New Orleans metro area and
across the country for those who hear his show
simulcast on the Internet.
Anniversary of Hero Allograft
Celebrated in NO
Spinal Elements, an innovative spine technol-
ogy company, officially celebrated the one-year
anniversary of its Hero Allograft Launch at this
year’s North American Spine Society (NASS) con-
vention in New Orleans. The company hosted a
celebration at the New Orleans House of Blues
to announce that an estimated $250,000 for chil-
dren’s charities will have been raised for from its
Hero Allograft sales by the end of 2013.
A check presentation of $23,000 was presented
that night to the local Make-A-Wish chapter, and
granted in honor of Dr. Mike Leahy, one of the first
surgeons in the U.S. to participate in Spinal Ele-
ments “Pledge to Be a Hero” program. Dr. Leahy
uses Hero allograft exclusively and is largely
responsible for the program’s success to date.
